Solotech Installation at Shawinigan Arena |
Introduction Freshly opened in December 2008, The Shawinigan Amphitheatre is a modern, 4,000 plus seat, multi-purpose arena and community centre, and home to The Shawinigan Cataractes, the local Junior Hockey team. The A/V system was designed by Solotech Designer Pierre-Paul Gignac, and installed by Solotech’s technical team under the supervision of Jean-Pierre Toussaint. The Amphitheatre replaces the aging Arena Jacques Plante, and is now one of the most important cultural and sporting facilities of it’s kind between Quebec City and Montreal. Increasingly, it has inspired other communities in the province and is an ideal template for them to follow for upgrading their own facilities and systems.
The System The benefit for those looking to emulate the Shawinigan arena’s system is twofold - a combination of the high quality presentation and flexible video playback solutions offered by the Edirol PR-1000HD, and the economic use of manpower required to operate the system during games and other live events. Located in the arena’s main control booth, the Edirol PR-1000HD is pivotal to the video production providing recording and playback of custom content. The output of the PR-1000 goes to three Apcus Leyard LED screens incorporated in the arena’s central 6-sided scoreboard, and a variety of Sharp monitors located elsewhere in the facility.
With only one dedicated tech running video at the Arena, the PR-1000HD makes it extremely easy for that operator to organize and present player statistics and images as well as instant replays and slow motion video shots. The promotional material is also stored and played back instantly on the PR-1000HD’s removable HDD’s which can obtain content via the facility’s MCS Server through the network port. The complete video system also incorporates 2 HVRS 270 Sony Broadcast Cameras, a video mixer, as well as full sound system.
Application “Ease of use, reliability and functionality were the main considerations in Solotech’s choice of the Edirol PR-1000HD”, says Gignac, Solotech’s chief designer. He also cites the intuitive and instantaneous playback mode, a highly transparent video editor, connectivity and compatibility with a variety of storage mediums; and, finally, it’s ability to cross fade smoothly between clips on the playback screens. The same system will now inhabit two similar facilities, including one in Rimouski, Quebec, which is scheduled to host the next National Junior Hockey League Memorial Cup finals.
“We’re kind of on a roll here.” Gignac says. “From the Shawinigan project we’ve sold two more PR-1000HD’s - Two new projects, like this one, each using the PR-1000HD’s.”
